Some Great Tips on Caring for Dogs

Caring for dogs is a lost more responsibility than many people realize. While it is incredibly easy to be sucked in by the idea that dogs are all slobbery kisses and soulful cuddles, the reality is that dogs have both emotional and physical needs that must be cared for. We are going to talk about a few of the physical aspects of caring for dogs, as well as some of the emotional responsibilities that dog ownership includes.

First, there is the obvious need for food and water. The type of food one feeds their dog is completely their own choice, but it’s worth bearing in mind that some dogs do have food intolerances just like we humans do. One must keep their eyes open for signs that their dog is suffering a food allergy, such as bald patches in the fur, excessive scratching, skin infections or weeping sores that recur after antibiotic treatment, and a change in bowel movements, such as constipation or excessive diarrhea. Water should be available to the dog at all times, refreshed on a daily basis.

Exercise is another important component to consider, and one that many people fail to consider when choosing a dog. The physical requirements of dogs really depend upon the breed. Some breeds, such as German shepherds and English Springer spaniels have high demands for physical activities. A dog with a high exercise need should be allowed to run off-leash in a safe environment every day. The duration of this exercise period depends on the breed. Other breeds, such as terriers, can get an adequate amount of exercise from everyday movement within the home combined with a short leash-led walk. It is essential that when choosing a dog, one considers the breed and the level of exercise the dog will need to maintain in order to remain healthy. The lifestyle a dog owner leads has a huge impact on the health of a dog. For instance, a person who works throughout most of the day would be better suited to a low-energy dog rather than a high energy one that would suffer due to lack of exercise.

There are many emotional aspects to consider when caring for dogs. The ideas that Labradors are always happy and all pit bulls are vicious are complete misconceptions. Dogs vary from breed to breed, yes, but they also differ as individuals, just like we humans do. While Labradors are generally quite happy go lucky and willing to please their owners, there is the chance of coming across a Labrador with a history that has shaped his/her personality to be introverted, suspicious, and unsociable. When choosing a dog, it’s important that one doesn’t go by stereotypes but rather by doing plenty of research on breed personalities. The very best way to get a good grasp of a dog’s personality is to spend plenty of one on one time with it before taking it home.

The personality of a dog can also be shaped by the owner’s lifestyle. An owner who is rarely home will not be there to give the dog the affection that most dogs crave. Loneliness in a dog can soon lead to jealous behavior and destructive actions. On the other end of the spectrum, providing too much attention to a dog can have a spoiling effect which can also result in negative behavior. Before committing to owning a dog, it’s important that the potential owner first evaluates their lifestyle to ensure that they can be there to provide daily affection, yet are firm enough to provide leadership and discipline for their dog. Not only with the dog have a happier and more fulfilling life, but the dog will also maintain a level of respect for a consistent and providing owner.
